Assessments
Assessments
The course is letter graded. Four things are graded.
| Component | What it means | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly update emails | Twelve updates to the person you report to, CC strategy-program@byu.edu. VPs Friday, presidencies Monday. See Weekly Updates. | 50% |
| Attendance | Be in the room. Twelve sessions, one free absence. | 25% |
| Feedback conversation | One conversation with your leader at the end of the semester, plus a short reflection. See Feedback Conversations. | 10% |
| Discussant | Pick a company or leader, share a short pre-read, and lead a 15 minute discussion once. See Being a Discussant. | 15% |
Nothing in this course is graded on hours worked. Every component is available in full to an unpaid volunteer VP and a paid employee alike, by design. See Credit and Pay in the syllabus.
Weekly Update Emails
Twelve updates each, sent to the person directly above you in the program, with strategy-program@byu.edu in CC. The CC is how completion is tracked, so an update without it does not count.
Two deadlines, because the updates cascade. VPs write first so their co-presidents have something to roll up.
| You are | Full credit | Half credit through | No credit |
|---|---|---|---|
| VPs | Fri, 11:59 PM | Mon, 11:59 PM | After Monday |
| Presidencies | Mon, 11:59 PM | Wed, 11:59 PM | After Wednesday |
Nothing here requires working on a Saturday or a Sunday. The reporting table, format, and an example are on the Weekly Updates page.
Feedback Conversation
One conversation at the end of the semester. You meet with the person you report to, both of you give feedback, and each of you submits a short reflection afterward.
| Conversation held | Reflection due |
|---|---|
| Nov 17 to Dec 4 | Fri, Dec 4, 11:59 PM |
The reflection is what is graded, not the feedback. Nothing anyone says about you affects your grade. Details are on the Feedback Conversations page.
Attendance
Twelve sessions. Attendance is taken starting Fri, Oct 9. Everyone has full credit for the sessions before that.
Everyone gets one free absence, no questions asked. Do not email anyone about it, do not explain it, do not apologize for it. It is yours to spend on whatever the semester throws at you: an interview, an illness, a family thing, a week that got away from you.
After that, absences count.
| Sessions missed | Attendance credit |
|---|---|
| 0 or 1 | Full |
| 2 | 11 of 12 |
| 3 | 10 of 12 |
| and so on | one session per absence |
Each absence past the first costs about two points of your final grade.
Two things the free absence does not cover. It does not excuse that week’s update, which is sent by email and does not require you to be in the room. And if you miss the session you are signed up to lead as discussant, arrange a swap with someone in advance rather than spending the free absence on it.
Discussant
Once during the semester you and up to two classmates pick a company or leader, put a link to a short pre-read in the sign-up sheet by Tuesday 11:59 PM, and lead a 15 minute discussion that Friday. Details and grading are on the Being a Discussant page.
There is no separate AI assessment. AI proficiency is built and demonstrated in the weekly drills, which is why the paid subscription is required. See Required Tools in the syllabus.
Credit and Pay
Because student employees are paid for their leadership work, class sessions and class-specific assignments are not billable hours. Keep the two separate on your timesheet.
