Session Template
Every session runs the same five blocks in the same order, the way a practice does. The sequence does not change week to week. What changes is the content inside each block.
| Block | Minutes | Clock | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Announcements | 5 | 12:30 | Logistics, deadlines, program news |
| Discussant block | 15 | 12:35 | A company or leader chosen by the discussants, student led |
| Drills | 10 | 12:50 | Follow along and build it live, usually with AI |
| Practice | 45 | 1:00 | Work session. Students build, coaches roam |
The first three blocks are the 30 minute leadership development block. Practice is the 45 minute working block, published on the schedule as the project roundtable.
Announcements (5 min)
Program logistics only. Anything that takes longer than a minute to explain belongs in Practice or in email. Standing items:
- Upcoming club events and who owns them
- Deadlines landing this week or next
- Recruiting calendar changes
- New hires, role changes, vacancies
Discussant Block (15 min)
Up to three discussants pick a company or leader, put a link to a short pre-read in the sign-up sheet by Tuesday 11:59 PM, and lead the discussion. Everyone takes one turn across the semester. Guest speakers and case discussions take this block on the weeks they appear. See Being a Discussant.
Drills (10 min)
A follow-along. You are at the front with your screen up, everyone has a laptop open, and the room builds the same thing at the same time. Nobody watches a demo. If a student’s screen is dark, the drill is not working.
The default format is an AI follow-along: you narrate the prompt, everyone types their own version, and the interesting part is where the outputs differ. Ten minutes is enough for one artifact, not a workflow. Pick something a leader would actually produce this week.
Candidates:
- Draft the recruiting email to a firm contact, then compare what six people got back
- Turn a messy set of event notes into a one page brief
- Build the agenda for a club presidency meeting from a two sentence description
- Take a plan someone wrote and have AI argue against it, then judge whether it was right
- Summarize a case or article into the three sentences you would say out loud
Rules that keep it a drill and not a lecture:
- Everyone types. You go slow enough that the slowest person keeps up.
- Same starting prompt for the room, so the differences are visible.
- Stop at ten minutes even if it is unfinished. Unfinished is fine, it makes the point.
- Two or three people read their output out loud before you move on.
If a follow-along needs more room, take the extra five minutes from Practice rather than from the Principle block.
Practice (45 min)
Students take the rest of the hour and actually do the work. The drill showed them the move once. Practice is where they run it on their own club’s real deliverable, at their own desk, for forty five minutes.
Scott, Sarah, and Luke roam the room the whole time. Roaming is the instruction method here. There is no front of the room during Practice.
What roaming looks like:
- Read over a shoulder before saying anything
- Ask what they are trying to do, not what they are doing
- Two minutes per student, then move. Come back around rather than camping.
- Carry patterns forward: if three people hit the same wall, stop the room and say so
Sarah and Luke have two modes and can pick per week:
- In the room. Roam alongside Scott, same job, three coaches covering thirty students.
- Broken out. Pull a subgroup into a side conversation: a club that needs focused help, a first-time VP who needs onboarding, a team with a deadline that week. Or run their own work while available to the room.
Decide the mode in prep, not on the fly, so the room knows who to look for.
Club and presidency updates and cross-team coordination still need a home. Either give them the first ten minutes of Practice before students scatter, or fold the standing items into Announcements. Pick one and keep it the same every week.
