Being a Discussant

Each student leads one 15 minute discussion during the semester, with up to two classmates. Sarah and Luke went first. Sign up on the sign-up sheet by Wednesday, October 7.

The sign-up sheet link is in Canvas, in the Start here module and on the Discussant assignment.

What you do

  1. Pick a company or a leader. Choose one whose leadership principles are worth discussing. Living or dead, famous or not. Two groups may not pick the same one.
  2. Share a pre-read. By Tuesday 11:59 PM before your session, email it to the class (addresses are on the Class emails tab of the sign-up sheet) and put the link in the sign-up sheet. It can be an article, a video, a talk, or a one-page summary you write. Keep it under 15 minutes.
  3. Lead the discussion. Fifteen minutes on Friday. Ask the class questions and get them talking. Do not present.

The group with the October 9 session has until Wednesday, October 7 for the pre-read.

Questions to use

You can use these, write your own, or both.

  1. Which of this leader’s principles do you admire, and what did it look like in practice?
  2. When does that principle go too far? See the Principles page.
  3. When would you have done something different from what this leader did?
